Distance: approx. 85–100 km, with a driving time of around 2.5–3.5 hours.
The road into Copey is paved but winding.

The weather can change quickly, with fog and rain being common at higher altitudes. The best time to depart is early morning for clearer weather and less traffic.

Copey:
Nestled in the Talamanca Mountains, Copey de Dota is a tranquil highland village, ideal for travellers seeking nature, peace and quiet, fresh air and an authentic rural lifestyle. It’s also among the top destinations in Costa Rica to see the Resplendent Quetzal and explore the essence of mountain-grown coffee.

When you arrive at your accommodation, you will receive a warm welcome and assistance with check-in. Take a moment to relax and explore your surroundings. You are free to enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.

If you need anything during your stay, the owners will be happy to help.

Day 3: Copey

How is your day going?

Have breakfast and get ready for an adventure in the misty mountains!

🎒 Tips for Quetzal spotting, especially during the breeding season (January to May):

  • Start early, ideally before sunrise.
  • Bring binoculars, warm clothing, and perhaps a thermos of coffee.
  • You can either walk independently or hire a local birding guide who knows the nesting trees.

Places You Can Visit:

  • San Gerardo de Dota (about 20 minutes from Copey).
  • Los Quetzales National Park (about 25 minutes from Copey).

Have lunch in the village or at your accommodation and try local dishes such as sopa negra (black bean soup) or casado, which consists of rice with grilled vegetables.

In the Afternoon (visit a local coffee farm):

  • Copey is located in one of Costa Rica’s finest speciality coffee regions.
  • Take a tour of a coffee farm to learn about the process from bean to cup.
  • Enjoy coffee tastings, roasting demonstrations, and, if in season, even pick your beans!

Recommended places include Finca Copey or one of the small organic farms.

Dinner with a View (fresh, organic, and local):

Enjoy a nourishing home-cooked dinner at your eco-lodge or with a local family in Copey. Many meals are made using organically grown vegetables, mountain herbs, and seasonal produce straight from the garden. Typical dishes may include roasted root vegetables, organic rice and beans, fresh salad, homemade tortillas, and sometimes trout or cheese from the surrounding valley. It’s a true farm-to-table experience, served with heart and surrounded by the quiet beauty of the mountains.

📍 Where to Find This?

Ask at Finca Copey, Casa Campo Verde, or other eco-lodges that grow their produce or collaborate with local farmers.
