Witness the magic of sea turtle nesting in Costa Rica!

Costa Rica is one of the world’s most important sea turtle nesting grounds, playing host to six different species that come ashore on both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts. The nesting season varies depending on the species and region, but generally falls between July and November during the rainy season. Some species, such as the enormous leatherback turtle (the world’s largest), nest at different times on the Caribbean and Pacific coasts.

One of the most extraordinary sights in nature is the mass arrival of olive ridley turtles, when up to 2,000 turtles come ashore in a single night to lay their eggs. Guided by an expert biologist, you will have the chance to observe this ancient ritual up close in silence and with respect.

Although Tortuguero is often promoted as the place to see turtles, we intentionally avoid it. Despite its fame, the area has become overcrowded and overly commercialised, and no longer offers the peace that sea turtles and mindful travellers deserve.

Instead, Into Nature takes you to lesser-known, more authentic nesting beaches scattered along both coasts. Here, your encounter with a turtle will be peaceful and personal, free from crowds, a better experience for you and far less stressful for the animal.

It is important to remember that if a turtle is disturbed while coming ashore, she may turn back and not lay her eggs. Silence, distance and patience are vital.

If the timing is right, we will visit one of the most important olive ridley turtle nesting sites on Earth: Ostional Wildlife Refuge. Accompanied by our local guide and a sea turtle biologist, you will walk along the beach by moonlight and witness this rare and magical spectacle, an experience that touches everyone.

Into Nature will help you plan the ultimate trip away and show you the best of wherever you visit.
