Trekking Adventures Around Indigenous Reserves
Costa Rica is home to several traditional indigenous tribes, many of which live in protected reserves surrounded by forests, mountains and rivers. These communities preserve their ancestors’ knowledge, customs and way of life, maintaining a deep and meaningful connection to the land.
The most well-known tribes reside in the highlands of Talamanca and the southern regions of the country. The Boruca and Guaymí (Ngäbe-Buglé) communities are among the most accessible for visitors.
Into Nature has a special connection with the Guaymí, forged through collaboration on community-based development projects in the past. We are proud of the bond we have built with them, and when appropriate, we can arrange respectful visits for travellers who are genuinely interested in learning from and engaging with these communities.
A unique cultural event takes place each year in the Boruca territory, where an important traditional festival is held around New Year’s Eve. If you’re travelling at this time, attending the festival is a rare opportunity to witness indigenous storytelling, rituals, masks and dance that have been passed down through the generations.
