Power, beauty and stillness: Costa Rica’s most active volcanoes

There are around 120 volcanic formations in the country. Around 60 of these are considered dormant or extinct. Five of these are classified as active, including Poás, Turrialba, Irazú, Rincón de la Vieja and Tenorio. All of these volcanoes are located within national parks, which are protected and preserved for their ecological and geological importance.

While the famous Arenal Volcano, near the bustling town of La Fortuna, is widely visited for its past eruptions and symmetrical shape, Into Nature chooses not to stop here. The area has become too crowded, and while the volcano is now dormant, its iconic silhouette can still be admired from the road, making it a perfect photo stop as you pass by.

Instead, we take our guests to volcanoes, offering more solitude and a deeper connection with the land.

  • Poás Volcano is easily accessible and ideal for a short scenic visit, making it perfect for the first or last day of your trip. The crater is just 750 metres from the car park, and our nearby lodge is only a 30-minute drive away
  • Tenorio Volcano, which is part of the national park housing the stunning Río Celeste, offers both geothermal wonders and lush rainforest trails
  • Another favourite is Rincón de la Vieja, which boasts a spectacular landscape of bubbling mud pots, hot springs, waterfalls and a forest teeming with wildlife

These lesser-known volcanic regions align with the values of Into Nature: fewer crowds, a closer connection with nature, and experiences that ground you in the living rhythms of the Earth.

Into Nature will help you plan the ultimate trip away and show you the best of wherever you visit.
